Redirecting Children’s Behavior – Healing Power Struggles
10:00 am - 12:30 pm
Healing Power Struggles: Blending Loving Kindness and Firmness – Held in person at CCH
This workshop will be led by Kim Smith and is based on the work of Redirecting Children’s Behavior, Relational Life Therapy, and Lives in the Balance. If you took the Power Struggles class last fall there will be some review and some new info as well.
This workshop is for parents and teachers facing struggles in their relationships. Being firm about non-negotiable limits while simultaneously being loving and kind is challenging to many of us. Some of us are TOO KIND (e.g. not holding limits that have been set) and some are TOO FIRM (e.g. being rigid around limits). Frequently in co-parents, one partner is too kind and the other too firm causing painful power struggles that impact the whole family! In this workshop we will explore the roots of being too kind or too firm, and you will learn practical tools for handling conflict/power struggles. You will also learn some (not TOO complicated) neuroscience to help us better understand our (and our kids’ and partner’s) nervous systems and will learn about the different kinds of healthy boundaries in relationships. We will also practice some self-calming strategies (to help you show up as your best self in your close relationships) so that you can begin to avoid power struggles rather than repeatedly dealing with them.
